The Federation of Civil Societies Organisations (FOCS), Manipur, today highlighted the scale of the humanitarian crisis triggered by the violence that began on May 3, 2023, as it observed the third anniversary of the conflict at JN Dance Academy, Imphal.
Presenting an assessment of the impact over the past three years, FOCS stated that at least 217 people have lost their lives, while 58,821 individuals have been displaced from their homes. The organisation further reported that 7,894 houses were completely destroyed and 2,646 partially damaged, pointing to the extensive destruction of property and prolonged disruption of civilian life across the state.
FOCS stated that the figures reflected not only the immediate consequences of the violence but also the continuing hardship faced by affected families, many of whom remain in relief camps or have yet to return to their original homes. The organisation noted that the scale of displacement and damage had placed significant strain on livelihoods, access to basic services and social cohesion.
The observance, held under the theme “Bridging Divides for a Shared Future”, included a two-minute silence in memory of those who lost their lives in the conflict. Participants reiterated the need for restoring peace, rebuilding trust among communities and ensuring conditions conducive to safe resettlement of displaced persons.
The programme was attended by FOCS Acting President BM Yaima, UMO M. Sorojini Leima and General Secretary of Manipur Keithel Nupi Marup L. Memma as dignitaries. Assistant Professor Oinam Dilip of the Department of History, Oriental College, served as the resource person.
Addressing the gathering, BM Yaima stated that the observance aimed to reflect on the challenges faced by people in the aftermath of the violence and to explore pathways towards reconciliation and long-term peace. He stressed the importance of collective efforts to address humanitarian concerns and rebuild normalcy in the state.
Speakers at the programme also underlined the need for sustained dialogue, inclusive policy responses and coordinated action to mitigate the impact of the crisis. The event concluded with calls for unity and renewed commitment to bridging divisions and restoring lasting peace in Manipur.
