Imphal, June 12:
Five young soldiers of the Assam Rifles – all from the state of Manipur have been commissioned as Assistant Commandant of the Assam Rifles. Among the 5 AR soldiers, 1 is from Thoubal, 1 from Moirang, 2 from Ukhrul & another from Churachandpur.
An Assam Rifles statement said that these officers are special selectees from the soldier cadre of Assam rifles, who are chosen in a competitive selection process and sent for rigorous training to the prestigious Indian Army Officers Training Centre at Gaya.
The most significant achievement is that of Asst. Commandant G. Kennedy Sharma, r/o of Bengi Mamang Leikai Thoubal, S/o G. Manisana Sharma & Bigeshwari Devi. His father had worked in Minor Irrigation Dept. He completed his schooling in JNV, Khumbong & Somorendro Sana Royal Higher Secondary School, Thoubal Kshetri Leikai.
He was enrolled into the Assam Rifles in Apr 2005 & underwent training at the reputed 39 Gorkha Training center, where the best Gorkha soldiers are trained.
It is also encouraging that wherever he went for his service training, he bagged the best of grades. He was judged and awarded “Best Student” & with “Distinction” grades in 4 very important training courses of the Assam Rifles and the Army. He cleared the competitive selection examination of the Assam Rifles Assistant Commandants in the 1st attempt and as No 1 in the merit list.
After undergoing a year’s rigorous Officer’s Training from July 2020 onwards, he literally swept the Awards Table clean with 9 impressive Trophies and awards of the OTA. It included the Silver Medal for ARTRAC (Army Training Command at Shimla), 1st in Overall Order of Merit.
On 12th June 2021, Commandant of the Officer Training Academy Gaya,Lt Gen G A V Reddy, Shaurya Chakra, Vishist Seva Medal& Mrs Tara Reddy, 1st Lady of OTA Gaya decorated the shoulders of the new Officer with the 3 stars of responsibility and duty.
The journey of Asst. Commandant G. Kennedy Sharma from humble surroundings of Charangpat Thoubal to an Active Assam Rifles Battalion in the Jammu & Kashmir is a highly commendable achievement. Many more young men of the state should make efforts to join the organisation which provides ample opportunity to capable young men and women. Indeed a proud moment for the state.
