Fitting tribute paid to Mahatma Gandhi on birth anniversary

A solemn tribute was paid to Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Nation, on his birth anniversary at Gandhi Memorial Hall, Imphal, today. Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the ceremony by offering floral tributes to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi.
The observance, which also marked National Cleanliness Day/Swachh Bharat Diwas, was attended by the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, a former Chief Minister, MLAs, the Chief Secretary, the DGP, senior civil and police officials, and members of the public, all of whom joined in paying their respects.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor reflected on Gandhiji’s timeless message of truth, non-violence, and self-reliance, stressing that these ideals remain as relevant today as they were during the freedom movement. He highlighted Gandhi’s principle of self-reliance as a guiding force for individuals to take responsibility for their own progress and contribute to the development of society.
The Governor also noted the success of the Swachh Bharat Mission in Manipur, stating that local bodies have made remarkable progress in sanitation and waste management, with the state’s efforts being acknowledged at the national level. He said these achievements demonstrate the collective commitment of citizens, local authorities, and the state government to building a cleaner and healthier environment.
Further, he spoke about initiatives such as Make in India, which are opening new avenues for the youth of Manipur, particularly through the promotion of indigenous products and handloom, thereby generating livelihoods. He appealed to the people to embrace cleanliness as a way of life and work together towards creating a cleaner, healthier, and more prosperous Manipur.
The programme also featured a soulful opening performance by artistes of Shri Shri Bal Mukanda Dev Musical College and a captivating dance choreography of Raghupati Raghava Raja Ram presented by the Government Dance College, which added a cultural essence to the tribute.
