Imphal, July 15:

First time in Manipur, a team of Dental Doctors led by Dr. Koijam Sashikumar Singh, Department of Oral Medicine and Radiology, Dental College, RIMS successfully removed two stones each measuring 4 mm and 3mm in length from left Submandibular duct. The team of doctors includes Dr. Deepak Ningombam Singh and Dr. Albert Ashem.
Dr. Koijam Sashikumar Singh stated that just like in kidneys, stones may be formed within the salivary glands and ducts. If stones are formed within the gland, there may be pain and swelling of the involved gland located in the upper neck and ear region.
He further stated that the presence of infection within the gland and duct, reduced salivary flow, reduced water intake, and accumulation of inorganic salts like calcium, hydroxyapatite, whitlockite, and octacalcium phosphate may lead to stone formation.
