With a message to contribute in conserving the state animal, the first ever historic Sangaigi Numit (Sangai Day)was observed here at the Manipur Zoological Garden premises today. The event was organised by Sangai First Foundation and Wildlife Wing of the State Forest department.
Well-known environmentalist & wildlife expert Dr Khangembam Shamungou also known as Sangai Shamungou, former principal of Kumbi College K Jugeshwor and Director L Birmangol Singh of Manipur Zoological Garden were present during the Sangai Day observation.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr Shamungou narrated the significance of observing the day on December 10. He said the first meeting of the then four members Manipur Board for Wildlife which was held on this day 70 years ago decided to have a Sangai sanctuary. The four members of the then Board include Lalit Madhav, RK Bijoychandra, Gourahari and Kunjabihari.
He further said Manipur Brow-Antlered Deer(Rucervus eldii eldii) is known as Sangai in Manipur(India)while similar deer species found in Myanmar is known as Thamin or Myanmar brow-antlered deer while it is called Lamang or Siamese brow-antlered deer in Thailand.
The Sangai is categorised as critically endangered deer under the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Schedule I species of the Indian Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972.
