FIR registered over gun salute incident in Saikul, arms and uniforms seized

The Manipur Police has registered a First Information Report (FIR) in connection with the controversial gun salute incident that took place on May 3 at Saikul in Kangpokpi District. In a statement uploaded at ‘X’ on Saturday, the police confirmed that legal action has been initiated and investigations are currently underway.
According to the statement, the incident involved a ceremonial gun salute allegedly conducted by unidentified individuals during a public event. Responding to the incident, the police have summoned local leaders and community elders to the concerned police station for questioning and further clarification regarding their roles and knowledge of the programme.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the police have conducted multiple raids across different locations in the region. During the operations, five single-barrel guns and a number of camouflage uniforms believed to have been used during the incident were seized. Authorities have stated that the raids will continue in the coming days to apprehend those involved and to recover any remaining weapons.
The police warned that the organisers of the event will be dealt with in accordance with the law. Efforts are being intensified to identify and arrest all individuals responsible for the incident.
The Kuki-Zo community observed the second anniversary of the May 3 conflict — which began on May 3, 2023, in Kangpokpi, Churachandpur, and other areas — as “Separation Day.” It was during a celebration at Kangpokpi district that armed cadres in camouflage paid gun salute in the presence some state police as shown in the video. In Imphal, COCOMI, AMUCO, FOCS and other CSO separately organized similar observance in peaceful way.
