Ukhrul, May 29:
In yet another violent incident along the vulnerable Imphal–Ukhrul–Kamjong road stretch, a driver of the Food Corporation of India (FCI) was killed on the spot while a policeman sustained injuries after suspected Kuki armed militants allegedly opened fire today morning around 11 am NH- 202 near Yaolen village under Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district.
According to reports, the deceased FCI driver, believed to be from West Bengal, died instantly in the attack. His identity could not be immediately ascertained as no identification documents were recovered at the time of filing this report.
The injured policeman has been identified as Disingam Maringmei, Constable No. 1905583 attached to Ukhrul Police Station.
Sources said the attack occurred along National Highway-202, a crucial lifeline connecting Imphal with Ukhrul and Kamjong districts. Security forces rushed to the area soon after the incident, and additional forces have reportedly been deployed to prevent further escalation.
The latest ambush marks the third major attack in the same area since February this year. Earlier in May, two civilians travelling along the highway were killed in a similar attack allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants.
In another incident, a policeman returning from official duty from Litan Police Station was also injured after militants reportedly laid an ambush on the route.
The recurring attacks have triggered serious concern among commuters and local residents over the deteriorating security situation along the highway.
Mentioned may be made that large number of Kuki community women blocked the road at Sangkhai Kuki Village area earlier today morning around 9 am. Goods ferrying trucks towards Ukhrul were halt and the security forces face hard time clearing the road. Tear gas and mock bomb were reportedly fired to disperse the agitating women. The road blocked is being underway under the aegis of the Kuki Inpi Manipur demanding release of Kuki hostages.
Meanwhile, sounds of gun firing has been heard from TM Kasom Village area.
