Farmer shot dead while working in paddy field in Kangpokpi

A 53-year-old farmer was shot dead by unidentified armed assailants while working in a paddy field in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district on Saturday evening, police said.

The deceased has been identified as Haolal Singsit, a resident of Govajang village in the Kuki-majority district. He died on the spot after sustaining gunshot injuries.

Police said his wife, Nemneikim Singsit, who was working alongside him in the field at the time of the attack, escaped unhurt.

According to local residents, around 20 rounds of gunfire were heard at about 4 pm, triggering panic in the area. Security forces later rushed to the spot, recovered the body and launched an investigation into the incident.

The motive behind the killing remains unclear, and efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the assailants, police added.
