Ethics Committee meeting to examine complaint on 10 MLAs canceled

The meeting of the Committee on Privileges and Ethics of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, scheduled for today to examine the alleged unethical conduct of 10 MLAs, could be held as none of the committee members, except the Chairman, were present.
The committee meeting was called for today at 11 a.m. in response to a complaint filed by veteran politician O. Joy regarding the alleged unethical conduct of the 10 MLAs who are demanding separate administration within the state of Manipur. O. Joy submitted the complaint on May 18, 2023, to the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly. As directed by the Privileges and Ethics Committee, the veteran politician attended the meeting to express his views.
The complainant O Joy speaking to reporters at his Kakwa residence said that the Speaker of the Manipur Legislative Assembly seems to be supporting the 10 MLAs who are demanding separate administration from Manipur, which is unethical. He also expressed his dissatisfaction with the absence of the members of the committee. Joy also said that his complaint was to look into the unethical nature of the 10 MLAs by the speaker of the state assembly and he had not mentioned disqualifying those 10 MLAs to his petition.
“I went to attend the meeting of the Privileges and Ethics Committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly, except for the Chairman no members were present”, Joy said questioning the motives of the MLAs who are members of the committee.
MLA Sapam Nishikanta, the Chairman of the Privileges and Ethics Committee, arrived on time to chair the meeting, according to a report. However, none of the committee members showed up, the report added.
The Privileges and Ethics Committee of the Manipur Legislative Assembly consists of 7 members, including the Chairman. One of the members is MLA L.M. Khaute, who is among the 10 MLAs demanding separate administration. The other members who did not attend today’s meeting are MLA Abdul Nashir, MLA RK Imo, MLA Surjakumar Okram, MLA Achab Uddin, and MLA Sanasam Premchandra Singh.
