Environment Awareness Camp held at Purum Chumbang village

The Chandel Forest Division on Monday organised an Environment Awareness Camp at Purum Chumbang village under the theme, “Community Participation in Conservation of Forest Resources and Sustainable Livelihood,” with financial assistance from the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA).

Around 210 villagers participated in the programme, which also featured a tree plantation drive aimed at promoting environmental conservation and community involvement in protecting forest resources.

Divisional Forest Officer, Chandel, Dr N. Munal Meitei attended the programme as the chief guest. Village Chief Khiang Donhra Chothe presided over the function, while RFO N. Deepa, Naga Hoho Vice President Rd. David Boyes and Honorary Wildlife Warden P.S. Ngamrung Anal attended as guests of honour.

Addressing the gathering, Dr Munal highlighted the importance of community participation in forest conservation and urged citizens to plant and nurture saplings to ensure a greener future. He noted that despite large-scale plantation drives undertaken by the Forest Department, the survival rate of saplings remains low, making public involvement essential for the success of afforestation efforts.

He further informed that as part of the 77th Van Mahotsav celebrations from July 1 to 7, the Chandel Forest Division aims to plant 1.10 lakh saplings across the district. Altogether, around 2.25 lakh saplings will be planted this year at Chandel, Komlathabi, Serou Lamkhai and Nungpan.

Speaking on the occasion, Rd. David Boyes and P.S. Ngamrung Anal stressed the importance of community ownership and collective responsibility in protecting forests and preserving natural resources for future generations.
