Education Minister chairs meeting with college principals’ and students’ organisation representatives

Education Minister Dr. Thokchom Radheshyam along with Commissioner, Higher Education & Technical Education, M. Harekrishna today held a meeting with the College Principals’ and representatives of Students’ Organization at the SCERT, Multipurpose Hall, Lamphelpat organised by the Higher Education & Technical Education.
The main agenda of the meeting were re-opening of colleges, examinations, college admission for the academic year, 2020-21 and admission fee structure, college intake capacity and shortages/hurdles in increasing the capacity.
Dr. Th. Radheshyam said that the meeting was convened to discuss and develop a preparatory plan so that necessary measures can be taken up in view of the re-opening of colleges once the lockdown imposed by the Government is relaxed. He said there are infrastructure shortages and other facilities in the education sector especially in higher education.
He also said that while the primary focus is maintaining the quality of education, it is imperative that the infrastructure of educational institutions is improved to facilitate the students who have returned back to the State due to COVID 19. He sought suggestions and opinions on the best option to increase the intake capacity and accommodate students who have returned back from other States’ if they desire to pursue their higher studies in the State Colleges’.
The Minister said that once the lockdown restrictions are lifted, the education sector will be facing tremendous pressure and the teachers will have to share the majority of the burden. He appealed to all the participants to communicate, collaborate and have a brainstorming session during the meeting to find the best solution. A survey for the higher educational institutions in the State is also under process to assess the infrastructure and facilities of the institutions, he added.
During the meeting the Minister interacted with the Principals and students representatives of the Students’ Organization. The meeting was attended by Director by the Higher Education & Technical Education, Kh. Diana Devi, Director, SCERT, Dr. M. Meenakumari Devi and officials concerned of the department.
