Education Department proposes shortening of summer vacation amid academic disruptions

The Director of Education (Schools), Government of Manipur, has proposed a revision in the duration of the upcoming summer vacation for the academic year 2026–27, citing repeated disruptions to the academic calendar due to the prevailing law and order situation in the state.
As per the proposal, the summer vacation period may be curtailed to June 15 to June 27, 2026, instead of the earlier notified schedule from June 8 to June 27, 2026. The move is aimed at compensating for the loss of instructional hours caused by frequent school closures.
In a formal communication addressed to the Commissioner (Education-S), Ng. Bhogendra Meitei, Director of Education (Schools), stated that schools across the state have been experiencing repeated interruptions, adversely affecting academic activities and students’ learning outcomes. He noted that shortening the vacation would help ensure completion of the prescribed curriculum within the academic session.
The proposal has drawn mixed reactions from parents. While some welcomed the move, others called for more stringent measures to address the academic gap. A few parents, speaking to Imphal Times, said that the summer vacation should be reduced to just one week, considering the number of classes already lost due to ongoing disturbances.
“It would be better if the Education Department considers cancelling the summer vacation altogether, given the extent of academic loss,” a guardian said. Another parent observed that the academic calendar in the state has been severely affected and urged the authorities to explore alternative measures to bridge the learning gap in the interest of students.
