The Election Commission of India (ECI) has begun the process of conducting the election to the office of the Vice President of India following the formal resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar. The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), through a Gazette Notification S.O.3354(E) dated July 22, 2025, officially notified the resignation.
As per Article 324 of the Constitution, the ECI is constitutionally mandated to conduct the Vice Presidential election. The process is governed by the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Act, 1952, along with the accompanying rules laid down in the Presidential and Vice-Presidential Elections Rules, 1974.
In preparation for the upcoming election, the ECI has initiated a series of pre-election activities. These include the compilation of the Electoral College, which comprises both elected and nominated members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The finalisation of the Returning Officer and Assistant Returning Officers is also underway, along with the preparation of detailed background materials on all past Vice Presidential elections.
The Commission has stated that the official election schedule will be announced shortly upon completion of all necessary preparatory work.
