EC raises issues with IT ministry over MCC violation

Imphal, Mar 21:

Election Commission has instructed the Centre to immediately cease the distribution of bulk WhatsApp messages through the “Viksit Bharat Sampark” initiative. This directive followed complaints received by the Commission. According to the Commission, this decision is part of its efforts to ensure fair competition.
Additionally, it has asked the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to provide a report on compliance with this directive. The Ministry clarified that the messages, including one from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, were sent before the Model Code of Conduct was enforced on March 16, although some may have experienced delays due to technical issues.
Despite the onset of the General Elections 2024 and the Model Code of Conduct, there were complaints that such messages, highlighting government initiatives, were still being received by citizens. The Congress and the Trinamool Congress objected to these messages and urged the Election Commission to take action against what they saw as a clear violation of the Model Code of Conduct.
