Easter Night Gunfire Shatters Peace: Thawai Village Authority condemns militant attack

Special Correspondent
Ukhrul, April 6:
Thawai Village Authority has strongly condemned what it described as an indiscriminate and unprovoked firing allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki militants from the Shangkai and Zalenbung areas targeting Thawai Village on the evening of Easter Sunday, April 5, 2026.
According to the Village Authority, the attack unfolded between approximately 6:30 pm and 10:30 pm, turning a peaceful and sacred day of Christian celebration into hours of fear and uncertainty for villagers. Armed assailants reportedly used automatic weapons, with multiple rounds striking residential areas. Several bullets pierced through windows and walls of houses, placing innocent civilians, including women and children, in grave danger.
In a condemnation statement issued on Monday, the Thawai Village Authority expressed deep concern over the timing and circumstances of the attack, particularly noting that advance operations had reportedly been conducted by central security forces in nearby areas just a day earlier. The Authority questioned the effectiveness of these operations and sought clarification over what it termed the apparent absence or inaction of security personnel while the prolonged firing was taking place.
“The failure to prevent or respond effectively to such an attack raises serious concerns regarding civilian safety and the accountability of the security apparatus,” the statement said.
The Authority condemned both the alleged militant aggression and what it viewed as a lapse in security responsibility, stressing that villagers who have been striving to maintain peace should not be left vulnerable to armed violence.
Calling for urgent government intervention, the Village Authority demanded a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation into the incident. It urged authorities to identify those responsible, ensure adequate protection for the village, and restore public confidence through decisive action.
The Thawai Village Authority further appealed to the Government to prioritize civilian security in vulnerable areas and ensure that justice is delivered without bias, delay, or political consideration, warning that continued insecurity threatens the fragile peace of the region.
