Drivers Union accuses Security Personnel of harassment on NH-37

IT Correspondent
Jiribam, April 14:

The All Jiribam Road Transport Drivers’ Union (AJRTDU) has accused security personnel of harassing truck drivers transporting essential goods along National Highway-37. In a press statement, AJRTDU President N. Sadananda Meitei highlighted the risks drivers face amid ethnic violence in Manipur while ferrying vital commodities through NH-37.
Sadananda Meitei expressed concern over drivers’ fear of encountering Manipur Police and CDO personnel, alleging extortion and intimidation tactics that disrupt their journeys. He condemned what he described as a “protection racket” where security forces allegedly extort money from drivers.
The union president emphasized the sacrifices made by drivers who leave their families behind to ensure the transportation of essential supplies. He criticized security personnel for reportedly seizing vegetables from delivery trucks and engaging in unchecked extortion practices. Sadananda Meitei lamented instances of physical harassment and mobile phone confiscation by security forces when drivers fail to meet their demands.
Highlighting the drivers’ apprehensions, Sadananda Meitei appealed to the Manipur government and its citizens to show compassion towards drivers and facilitate their safe passage on NH-37.
