Expressing his concern over the argument on the exact date of Puya Mei Thaba, Dr. Yumnam Mohendro, Ex Director College Development Council, Manipur University and Ex President, Manipur Historical Society, in a press statement said that the exact date of Puya Mei Thaba according to Meetei Calendar is 17th of Mera, 1732.
In his statement he mentioned that Manipur, which was formed by hills and valley, was once an independent kingdom. Manipuris have their own tradition and value system since time immemorial. Besides, they have their own religion, dwellings and festivals. However, some greedy people tried to destroy the rich cultural value of Manipur at many stages.
It continued that the culture of Manipur was largely affected during the reign of Meetei Ningthou Pamheiba (1709-1748). The downfall of Manipuri Society started during his reign. In his effort to destroy the history of Manipuri Society, Culture and Religion, he in consultation with Santidas Goshai burnt all the age old books of Manipur on the 17th Day of Mera in the year 1732. It is clearly mentioned in various books. Unfortunately, some self-styled, pseudo-scholar are trying to alter the date of Puya Mei Thaba on whatever date they want. They publish various books that can misguide and confuse the exact date of Puya Mei Thaba. It is right time to stay away from such books.
The statement added that our future generation will scold us if we misguide them based on wrong history.
