Dhanamanjuri University (DMU), Manipur, has issued an urgent notice concerning faculty members holding Ph.D. or M.Phil. Degrees from CMJ University, Meghalaya. The notice follows a directive from the Commissioner, Higher & Technical Education, Government of Manipur, dated December 27, 2024.
The notice mandates faculty members appointed, absorbed, regularized, promoted, or granted increments based on CMJ University degrees to submit their professional data, including photocopies of relevant certificates, by January 31, 2025. This applies to faculty bifurcated from the Directorate of University & Higher Education, Government of Manipur, and those relying on CMJ University degrees for professional upgrades.
This development coincides with the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) findings that CMJ University continues to sell fake degrees despite its dissolution in 2013. The ED is investigating a money laundering case against the university’s chancellor, Chandra Mohan Jha, and his associates under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. Recent raids in New Delhi and Shillong uncovered incriminating documents, digital evidence, and ¹ 1.53 crore in frozen bank accounts.
Senior ED officials revealed that fake degrees from 2012 and 2013 are still being sold at exorbitant prices. Investigations show around 20,570 fake degrees were issued, despite the university operating with limited and questionable faculty credentials. The case stems from an FIR filed by Meghalaya Police, accusing the university of defrauding thousands of students.
