Disabled body urges for separate commissioner to deal disabled people

All Manipur Mentally Handicapped Persons’ Welfare Organisation (AMMHPWO), Mongshangei today urged the government to appoint a regular commissioner for disabled section.
Addressing a press conference today at Manipur Press Club, Imphal, Y. Ibechaobi Devi, Secretary of AMMHPWO said that there should be a regular commissioner to deal the disabled people  of the state who is well aware of disability and capable of taking up disabled work program. She added that the act of the United Nation’s convention on the right of persons with disability is not followed in the state. The government of the state should take up this issue as an important matter and set out a long term plan only for the disabled persons. Ibechaobi further added that the social welfare department of the state should include a budget for disabled persons. She added that AMMHPWO have received the ‘National Award for empowerment of persons with disability’ on the world disabled day at Bigyan Bhavan, New Delhi. Diploma in special education for mental retardation is the only one institute in Manipur which trains on how to handle mentally retarded children and there is special residential centre for the mentally retarded children however they are all run by private body. Thus she urged the concerned authority to absorb the institute and the centre by the government.
