Director MAHUD stresses policy and legal framework at National Seminar on Solid Waste Management

A two-day All India Seminar on “Solid Waste Management: Innovative Solutions for a Sustainable Future” began today under the aegis of the Institute of Engineers (India), Manipur State Centre, at the Department of Environment premises, Imphal. The seminar aims to spread awareness and explore actionable solutions for effective solid waste management in Manipur and beyond.
Speaking at the inaugural session, Director of MAHUD, Ng. Uttam Singh, highlighted the importance of a robust policy and legal framework in addressing the growing challenges of solid waste. He stressed that effective legislation, coupled with strict enforcement, is the backbone of sustainable waste management practices. “Policies should not remain on paper but must translate into action on the ground. Strong legal backing ensures accountability and compels all stakeholders to participate responsibly,” he said.
He further underscored the need for collaborative efforts between government agencies, municipalities, and communities, noting that public participation is crucial for the success of waste management initiatives.
Earlier, the inaugural programme was attended by Prof. N. Lokendra Singh, Vice Chancellor; Dr. T. Brajakumar, Director of Environment; L. Swamikanta, Chairman of IEI Manipur Centre; Dr. Th. Subhaschandra, Convenor of IEI Manipur Centre; and Dr. Kh. Nimo, Convenor of the seminar, among others.
In the technical session, Ng. Uttam presented a detailed talk on the policy framework, while Dr. K. Khelchandra of Manipur University delivered a lecture on key issues and emerging challenges in municipal solid waste management. Experts, including the Secretary of CRED, also emphasized active community involvement.
The seminar will conclude tomorrow with presentations and discussions aimed at charting a roadmap for implementation of sustainable practices in the state.
