Tensions have escalated between diesel auto transporters and e-rickshaw operators on the Mayai Lambi Road as diesel auto drivers have begun restricting the movement of e-rickshaws on the route.
On Friday, a group of diesel auto drivers belonging to Laningthou Pakhangba Transport and Nongpok Ningthou Transport, who operate between Ningthemcha Karong, Heirangoithong, Khagempalli, and Wahengbam Leikai, stopped e-rickshaws at Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai. The transporters issued a stern warning, cautioning e-rickshaw drivers of serious consequences if they continued operating along the route.
Speaking to Imphal Times, Thiyam Basanta, a representative of the Diesel Auto Driver Union, stated that e-rickshaw operators must obtain permission by enrolling in one of the existing transport associations if they wish to provide services on this route. He expressed concerns that e-rickshaws have severely impacted the livelihood of diesel auto drivers, many of whom are struggling to sustain their income.
“There are around 80 diesel autos providing passenger services on this route, and nearly 50% of them are running their vehicles on loans. Without proper regulation and permission, it will be difficult for us to feed our families,” Basanta said.
The diesel auto drivers further warned that if e-rickshaws continue operating on the route without approval, they would face penalties, including fines. However, Basanta clarified that the diesel auto associations have no objections if e-rickshaws provide reserved services rather than regular passenger transport.
