Dialogue only path to peace, says Khemchand as Manipur Press Club marks 51st Foundation Day

MLA Yumnam Khemchand yesterday said dialogue remains the only effective means to restore peace in Manipur, underlining the vital role of journalists in sustaining democracy amid the ongoing conflict, as the Manipur Press Club observed its 51st foundation day.
Speaking as the chief guest at the programme organised in connection with the All Manipur Working Journalists Union, Khemchand said the contribution of the media becomes even more significant in a conflict-affected state. He stated that journalists in Manipur have continued to perform their duties with dedication and sacrifice despite working under difficult circumstances and called upon the public to support and encourage them.
Referring to the prevailing crisis in the state, Khemchand said various sections of society have initiated efforts to restore peace and stressed that such initiatives should be encouraged rather than undermined, as people from all communities are suffering due to the prolonged unrest. He maintained that reconciliation through dialogue was the only way forward to achieve lasting peace and normalcy.
The foundation day observance began with senior journalists paying floral tributes at the Memorial Pillar inside the Manipur Press Club complex in remembrance of departed members of the fraternity. On the occasion, senior journalists who played a key role in the establishment, development and continued functioning of the Manipur Press Club were honoured with mementos and citations.
The function was attended by MLAs Kh Ibomcha and Sapam Kunjakeshor, Director of Information and Public Relations Ngamgom Uttam, and office bearers and executive members of the All Manipur Working Journalists Union and the Editors’ Guild of Manipur, among others.
