DESAM demands removal of Education(S) Director over alleged malpractice in pre-primary teachers’ recruitment

IT News
Imphal, June 13:

The Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has raised serious concerns over the ongoing recruitment process for pre-primary teachers, highlighting non-compliance with the National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020). DESAM insists that only trained teachers from National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) approved institutes should be considered for these positions. The student body has urged the government to immediately stop the selection of 1140 pre-primary teachers on a contract basis until proper training criteria are met.
Contrary to DESAM’s appeal, Education (S) Director L. Nandakumar issued a notification on May 27, 2024, extending the application deadline for recruitment to June 15, 2024. This move has been interpreted by DESAM as a clear indication that their concerns are being ignored by both the Education Minister and Director Nandakumar.
DESAM activists attempted to gherao and lock the Directorate of Education (S) office today, according to DESAM President Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei. After that a minor scuffle broke out between the activists and police forces during the protest.
DESAM’s discontent dates back to 2019 when they first appealed to the government and the education minister to establish training institutes with proper affiliations under the draft NEP Policy. Despite their persistent efforts, no significant action has been taken to address these issues.
DESAM has alleged malpractice in the recruitment process, claiming that established norms are not being followed. The student organization has called for the removal of L. Nandakumar from his position by June 15, 2024, warning that failure to do so will result in agitation starting June 16, 2024. DESAM President Mayengbam Somorjit Meitei has asserted that the Education Minister and Director Nandakumar will bear full responsibility for any consequences arising from the unrest.
