Imphal, Sept. 12:

DESAM Secretary Women Welfare Sanoujam Nikita Chanu in a press released state that a memorandum
Democratic Students’ Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister of Manipur demanding immediate action against rapists of minor girl under POCSO.
In the memorandum submitted by the Secretary Women Welfare of DESAM, Nikita Chanu stated that the memorandum was submitted urging the CM to take action those persons who disclosing the identity of the Victim and their family members with their names and photos is the sign of disregarding the dignity and Re-victimisation/double victimisation.
“ Government should take necessary action to not repeat such acts in future. DESAM Secretary Women Welfare further appealed that during the trial periods or before getting justice, the victim and the family needed to get medical or psychological support and to rehabilitate both mentally and physically they should get compensation and relief timely. It is a misleading idea to say the victim has compromised justice after getting compensation as both of them are not interrelated. The Government should ensure the right to compensation to the victims and their family. The Government should introduce and implement a scheme, policy with a special budget for the victim and the family to endure their lives in a Sustainable Way. Other serious steps need to be taken up to empower the womenfolk of our state. Delaying justice is the main reason for increasing crimes and it also led to the absence of Preventive justice”, a statement said.
DESAM Secretary Women Welfare demanded Government should endorse adopting a strict Judiciary System in the state. Rapist and child, women murderer should be given Death Penalty at any cost. Although, it is the rule to complete a case of Fast Track Court within one year, there are many pending cases which have been pending for many years. According to the National Crime Record Bureau, Manipur Fast Track Court is among the most delayed trails. In the Previous month, It is a good step of Manipur Government to initiate Fast Track Special Court for Rape and POCSO but it’s a questionable whether it function well. It is required to set up a fully functioning Fast Track Special Court in every district of Manipur for speedy trial and justice, it said in the memorandum.
DESAM Secretary Women Welfare further said that the witnesses related with rape and murder cases should be given special protection and incentive by the government. The government should encourage the people not to be cowards to become a witness to bring justice. The witnesses should be respected and well regarded, it added.
