Demise of former IPS Officer and Socio-Political Commentator Potshangbam Sonamani mourned across the region

The sudden demise of former IPS officer and noted socio-political commentator Potshangbam Sonamani has evoked widespread grief across Manipur and the entire North East region. Sonamani, who passed away on July 19 while undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital, was widely respected for his lifelong commitment to public service, intellectual discourse, and the empowerment of Indigenous communities of the North East.
Late Potshangbam Sonamani had a distinguished career in the Indian Police Service, having served in various key capacities, including as Senior Superintendent of Police (Sr. SP) in Nagaland. During his tenure in the police force, he was known for his integrity, fairness, and deep understanding of the socio-political complexities of the region. His service was marked by a commitment to peace-building, law enforcement, and justice, particularly in areas marked by ethnic tensions and insurgency.
After retiring from active police service, Sonamani devoted himself to social, cultural, and literary causes. He became an influential public intellectual, using his voice and experience to speak on the rights, issues, and future of Indigenous communities in North East India. He was actively involved with several social and literary organizations and regularly contributed commentaries on contemporary political developments, cultural identity, and Indigenous rights. His writings and speeches were widely followed and respected by youth, academics, and policymakers alike.
Organizations such as the Kangleipak Students’ Association (KSA), the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI), and numerous civil society groups have expressed deep sorrow at his passing.
They described his death as an irreparable loss not only to Manipur but to the entire North East region. In a condolence message, KSA remarked that Sonamani’s contributions went beyond his role as a police officer and extended into the realm of socio-political awareness and Indigenous advocacy. COCOMI highlighted his role in promoting unity among various communities and his consistent efforts in defending the collective interests of the people.
Public figures, former colleagues, and well-wishers also recalled his humility, courage, and unyielding spirit in the face of adversity. Many noted that he never remained silent in times of crisis, always choosing to speak truth to power, even when it came at personal cost.
The legacy of Potshangbam Sonamani, as a bridge between administrative service and grassroots advocacy, will continue to inspire future generations. His final rites will be held at his native place, and a memorial service is expected to be organized by various organizations in the coming days to honor his remarkable life and contributions.
