DDAM seeks support for disability cricket, flags poor implementation of RPwD Act

The Disabled Development Association Manipur (DDAM) has called for greater support for disability cricket in the state, while expressing concern over the lack of proper implementation of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPwD) Act, 2016.

In a press release issued by its General Secretary, Md. Yunus Khan, the association stated that it has been promoting cricket among persons with disabilities in Manipur since 2004, relying on its own resources to participate in national championships.

The association said the Differently Abled Cricket Council of India (DCCI) has taken initiatives to promote disability cricket across the country. It stated that a DCCI Annual General Meeting was held in Delhi on September 18, 2026, attended by DCCI officials, BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia and Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

According to DDAM, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has assured support for the development of disability cricket at both national and state levels in view of the sport’s growing popularity.

As the affiliated body of DCCI in Manipur, DDAM said it had been asked to initiate efforts to develop the sport in the state. Persons with disabilities interested in taking up cricket have been invited to contact the association at 9862660332.

The association also expressed concern that despite the coming into force of the RPwD Act, 2016, its provisions were not being properly implemented in Manipur. It alleged that, apart from the Social Welfare Department, other government departments had failed to extend adequate support to persons with disabilities.

Meanwhile, DDAM acknowledged the Department of Youth Affairs and Sports (YAS), Manipur, for involving representatives of persons with disabilities in consultations on the draft Manipur State Sports Policy, 2026.

The association thanked YAS Minister Govindas Konthoujam and Director Veto for providing an opportunity to participate in the two-day consultation process. It expressed hope that the new sports policy would incorporate provisions for the promotion of disability sports and ensure greater participation of persons with disabilities in sporting activities.
