Manipur recorded one of the lowest numbers of registered cybercrime cases in the country in 2024, with just five cases reported, according to the latest Crime in India 2024 report released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB).
The NCRB data shows that cybercrime cases in Manipur have declined consistently over the past five years, falling from 79 cases in 2020 to 67 in 2021, 18 in 2022, three in 2023 and five in 2024.
Among the eight northeastern states, Assam reported the highest number of cybercrime cases in 2024 with 408, followed by Meghalaya (97), Arunachal Pradesh (78), Mizoram (50), Tripura (33), Sikkim (15), Nagaland (14) and Manipur (5).
Nationally, cybercrime cases rose sharply to 1,01,928 in 2024 from 86,420 in 2023, with Telangana recording the highest number of cases (27,230), followed by Karnataka (21,993), Uttar Pradesh (11,073) and Maharashtra (9,922).
The report also indicates that online fraud remained the largest category of cybercrime, accounting for 29,758 cases in 2024, followed by cheating (19,296) and computer-related offences (36,920).
The Ministry of Home Affairs said cybercrime prevention and investigation are primarily the responsibility of state governments, while the Centre continues to strengthen enforcement through the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, the 1930 cyber fraud helpline, cyber forensic facilities and capacity-building initiatives. As of June 30, 2026, authorities said financial frauds worth over Rs. 11,158 crore had been prevented through the Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System.
While Manipur’s figures remain significantly lower than those of other northeastern states and the national average, experts note that low registration may not necessarily reflect the actual prevalence of cybercrime, underscoring the need for greater public awareness, prompt reporting and stronger cybercrime investigation mechanisms.
