Sobita Mangsatabam, Secretary of Women Action for Development (WAD) strongly condemned Manipur Government for its insensitivity and irresponsibility towards crimes against women and children in the state.
She alleged and questioned all the 60 MLAs the reason for their insensitivity over such crimes. She asked whether is it that women and children are not much useful during election time? If so then, she said women should stand together not to exercise our right to franchise and should raise our voce against government.
Sobita made the statement while speaking at a public meeting held on “Denial of speedy trial and insensitivity of the government on crimes against women and children in Manipur” at Manipur Press Club today.
She said there were 296 reported crimes in 2015 itself however only a few were chargesheet and taken for trial. There are huge numbers of pending cases with or without charge sheet for many years.
She further expressed unhappiness over certain customary laws which are practiced amongst certain communities in Manipur which often permit the settlement any crime against women and children regardless of how heinous the crime committed was.
