Imphal, Aug 27:
The Coordination Committee (CorCom) commemorates the 93rd death anniversary of Haipou Jadonang, highlighting his enduring contributions to the liberation of the Zeliangrong people and the broader Manipur (Kangleipak) community. Born in 1905, Jadonang rose to prominence as a spiritual and political leader who strongly opposed British colonial rule. His efforts in uniting the Zeliangrong people for social and political reforms made him a key figure in resisting colonial exploitation.
The statement by CorCOM said that Jadonang was not just a leader but a visionary who foresaw the importance of unity among Manipur’s indigenous communities to counter colonial domination. He initiated a socio-religious movement aimed at revitalizing traditional practices and strengthening the cultural identity of the Zeliangrong people. This movement, while deeply rooted in spiritual revival, also carried a significant political agenda. Jadonang sought to establish self-governance and protect his people from British exploitation and oppression.
The statement further said that Jadonang’s growing influence and the threat he posed to colonial authorities led to his arrest and eventual execution by the British on August 29, 1931. Despite his martyrdom, his legacy lived on, inspiring future generations to continue the fight for independence and the preservation of their cultural heritage.
In remembering Haipou Jadonang, CorCom emphasized that his sacrifice was not in vain. Jadonang is regarded as a martyr who gave his life for the cause of Manipur’s freedom. His efforts laid the groundwork for continued resistance against oppression and the fight for the rights and dignity of the people.
The CorCom Publicity Committee called on the people of Manipur to draw inspiration from Jadonang’s life and to work towards achieving the aspirations he set forth. They stressed the importance of unity, freedom, and self-determination, principles that Jadonang passionately advocated for during his lifetime.
As the people of Manipur reflect on Jadonang’s legacy, CorCom urged them to renew their commitment to these ideals. The committee believes that by honoring Jadonang’s memory through continued dedication to these principles, the community can ensure that his contributions are not forgotten and that his vision for a free and united Manipur is realized.
