CORCOM pays tribute to Khongjom War martyrs; raises concerns over ongoing crisis

Conglomerate of armed rebel group – CORCOM has paid tribute to the martyrs of Khongjom Day, observed on April 23, while outlining its views on the historical significance of the day and the current situation in Manipur.
In a statement issued on the occasion, CORCOM said Khongjom Day commemorates the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives during the 1891 Anglo-Manipur War while defending the sovereignty of Manipur against British forces. It described the battle of Khongjom as a defining moment in the state’s history and a symbol of resistance, courage and sacrifice that continues to inspire successive generations.
The statement recalled that multiple battlefronts were witnessed during the 1891 conflict, including engagements at Laimaton, Leimatak and Lamangdong against the Silchar Column; Mayangkhang against the Kohima Column; and Tengnoupal, Thoubal Athokpam, Kakching Manaoching and Khongjom against the Tamu Column. It noted that many fighters chose death over surrender in their efforts to defend the land.
According to CORCOM, Khongjom Day represents Manipur’s own struggle for sovereignty and should be viewed distinctly from India’s broader independence movement. It stated that following the events of April 1891, Manipur lost its independence and subsequently came under British rule, with the administration later functioning under a Chief Political Officer as a protectorate.
The group also referred to a series of movements during the colonial period, including the First Nupi Lan of 1904, the movement led by Haipou Jadonang after 1921, the political mobilisation associated with Hijam Irabot after 1935, and the Second Nupi Lan of 1939. These were described as popular uprisings against British authority that reflected continued resistance among the people.
Further, the statement maintained that after the merger of Manipur with India in 1949, armed movements emerged under leaders such as Hijam Irabot and have continued in various forms since then. It characterised these developments as part of a broader and continuing struggle, during which many lives have been lost.
Turning to the present situation, CORCOM expressed concern over the violence that has persisted in Manipur since May 3, 2023. It stated that the conflict has led to widespread displacement, with thousands of people forced to leave their homes, and has severely disrupted normal life across affected areas. Particular concern was raised over the impact on education, with many children reportedly unable to attend school or access proper learning facilities.
The statement alleged that the ongoing crisis has deepened divisions among communities and weakened social cohesion. It further claimed that the situation has given rise to mistrust and fragmentation, complicating efforts to build unity and a shared political understanding among the people.
CORCOM also criticised political leadership in the state, alleging that successive developments since 1949 have contributed to hardship and dissatisfaction among sections of the population. It questioned whether elected representatives, including Ministers and MLAs, have effectively safeguarded the interests and unity of the people amid the ongoing challenges.
The group additionally alleged that external political strategies have influenced the situation in Manipur, contributing to divisions among communities. It claimed that the developments since May 2023 are widely perceived by sections of the public as part of a larger political dynamic, though such assertions remain contested.
Calling for collective reflection, CORCOM said that observance of Khongjom Day should go beyond ceremonial tribute and serve as a reminder of the need for unity, resilience and commitment to shared goals. It urged the people to draw strength from the sacrifices of the past and to uphold the spirit of togetherness in the face of present challenges.
Reiterating its position, the group appealed to the public to remain united and resolute in safeguarding the identity and future of Manipur. It also paid homage to all those who have lost their lives in the course of historical and ongoing conflicts, while extending solidarity to affected families.
Khongjom Day is observed annually in Manipur to commemorate the last major battle of the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891, in which Manipuri forces fought against the British.
