The Committee on Protection of Meetei Victims (COPMeV), Moreh, along with internally displaced persons (IDPs), has announced its support for the mass rally to be organised by the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) on October 31, demanding abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki armed groups.
The rally will also protest against what the organisers describe as a proxy war allegedly being waged by the Government of India in Manipur.
In a statement, COPMeV said the violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, had forced thousands of people from their homes, with many continuing to live in relief camps amid prolonged uncertainty and hardship.
The committee accused the Central and State governments of failing to ensure the safe return of displaced families and restore lasting peace. It also questioned claims of normalcy, citing continuing reports of violence and unrest.
Expressing concern over the living conditions of IDPs, COPMeV said the assistance of Rs. 100 per person per day was inadequate to sustain a dignified life. It also flagged the psychological distress and despair faced by displaced families.
COPMeV and the IDPs will join the rally to demand protection of Manipur’s territorial integrity, abrogation of the SoO agreement and concrete measures for the secure resettlement of displaced people in their original homes.
