Two convicts, including a convict on a death row, in July 2006 Mumbai suburban train serial bomb blast case, have been booked on charges of manhandling an officer of the Nagpur Central Prison, by Dhantoli Police in Nagpur (Maharashtra).
The offence has been registered under sections 353, 160, 34 IPC, which stipulate punishment for an assault or use of criminal force to deter public servant from discharge of his duty, against both the accused.
On Tuesday, the convict Naved Hussain Khan Rashid Hussain Khan (40) (No C/9169) and Mohmed Azam Aslam Butt (40) (No.C/9589) had altercations with each other, when they were brought out of their cells for breakfast. Soon, both began delivering fisticuffs and assaulted each other.
When the Prison Inspector Ishwardas Tulshiram Bahekar (44) tried to intervene, they beat him up and pushed him, as a result of which he fell on the ground. The guards rushed to the spot, over powered the duo and sent them to their respective cells.
Naved Hussain Khan Rashid Hussain Khan has a death penalty on his head, along with 4 others, for his active role in planting the bombs stuffed in pressure cookers, in different train on 11 July 2006. In the seven blasts, on crowded trains within 11 minutes, 207 people were killed 700 were wounded.
Thirteen were nabbed (of whom one was acquitted by the MCOCA court), while 17 are still absconding. Besides death to 5 accused, life imprisonment was awarded to 7 by Special MCOCA Judge Y D Shinde on 30 September 2015. The prosecution had claimed that the absconding accused included 13 Pakistanis and members of the Lashkar-e-Tayyba, a Pakistan-based terrorist outfit. Due to pending litigations, none of the death sentences have been carried out as yet.
Whereas Mohmed Azam Aslam Butt, is a notorious criminal serving life imprisonment on charges of killing one Kashinath Gharat at Andheri in Mumbai in September 2005. He was sentenced to life imprisonment on June 21, 2014. He was granted parole in 2014 and 2016, while he was lodged in Nashik Central Jail, and both times he had jumped. Then he secured 30-day parole on 26 October 2017, with an extension of 60 days. His parole expired on January 24, 2018 and when he didn’t show up the next day, a case was registered against him. Subsequently he was nabbed and was brought to the Nagpur prison.
There are many hardened convicts in Nagpur Central Prison, considered as high security prison. Yakub Abdul Razzak Memon, a convict on a death row, in 12 March,1993, serial bombing in Mumbai, in which 257 persons were killed and 713 others were injured, was hanged in the Nagpur Central Prison on 30 July 2015. After that the Nagpur Central Prison has been a focus of attention with more convicts are brought in due to its vast expanse.
