A one-day consultative meeting on the theme “Demographic Threats” was held today at the Rikhumei Taphou Women’s Conference Hall, where speakers called for greater unity among the indigenous communities of Manipur to safeguard their land, identity and constitutional rights.
The programme, which began with an opening prayer by Rev. C. H. Lubui, brought together youths, women, senior citizens and representatives from the Liangmai, Poumai, Mao, Thangal, Maram, Rongmei and Tangkhul communities. Dr. R. K. Chawang and social activist Ashang Kasar attended the meeting as resource persons.
Addressing the gathering, Ashang Kasar spoke on what he described as the demographic challenges confronting the indigenous people of Manipur, particularly in relation to ancestral land and identity. He advocated greater unity among indigenous communities to protect their traditional territories, preserve their identity and secure justice.
He also expressed concern over the reported settlement of Kuki refugees in areas including Moreh, Tengnoupal, Kangpokpi and parts of Chandel district. He urged the Naga community to remain vigilant and address the issue through democratic and constitutional means, stating that failure to respond could result in further demographic changes in the state.
Kasar further called on the Naga community to maintain a united approach in engaging with both the State and Central Governments until their concerns are addressed, while emphasising the need for collective efforts to safeguard indigenous rights.
Speaking on governance issues, Dr. R. K. Chawang raised concerns over alleged corruption and the implementation of government development programmes, particularly in the hill districts. He urged citizens to actively monitor development projects, question irregularities and demand greater transparency and accountability in public administration.
Stating that effective action against corruption would ensure that development reaches the people, Dr. Chawang appealed for collective public participation in combating corruption for the overall development of Manipur.
During the interactive session, Kasar reiterated that the indigenous communities of Manipur were facing a critical situation and alleged that the Central Government had not shown adequate sincerity in addressing their concerns. He cautioned that continued disunity could allow various groups to exploit the prevailing situation and stressed the importance of unity, strategic planning and effective diplomacy to protect the interests of future generations.
The meeting concluded with participants reiterating the need for unity, public awareness, accountability and collective action to address demographic concerns and safeguard the ancestral lands and rights of the indigenous peoples of Manipur. The programme ended with a closing prayer offered by Rev. Ch. Pouhotdin.
