Conrad Sangma to visit Imphal amid NPP MLA controversy

National People’s Party (NPP) National President and Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma is set to arrive in Imphal tomorrow, marking the first leg of his three-day tour of Manipur and Nagaland. The visit comes at a critical juncture in Manipur’s political landscape, as the state continues under President’s Rule since February 2025, following the resignation of former Chief Minister N. Biren Singh amid ongoing ethnic unrest between Meitei and Kuki communities.
Sangma is expected to hold consultations with NPP leaders, community representatives, and civil society members to explore common ground for peace, inclusive governance, and potential coalition arrangements. Analysts say the visit could reassert the NPP’s role as a stabilising force and provide momentum to efforts aimed at restoring democratic governance in the state.
The visit comes amid internal party concerns. NPP State President Yumnam Joykumar Singh revealed that an NPP MLA recently joined the BJP MLAs’ camp in Delhi without the party’s approval, clarifying that the move was unauthorised and does not represent the party’s position. The statement highlights rising tensions within the party as it navigates shifting alliances and attempts to maintain discipline ahead of potential coalition negotiations.
Political observers note that while the BJP’s influence in the state appears to be waning and Congress is seeking to regain ground, Sangma’s visit may play a pivotal role in shaping future political alignments and dialogue between communities. The NPP leadership aims to underscore its commitment to peace, accountability, and inclusive governance, with Sangma’s Imphal visit being central to reaffirming the party’s strategic and political presence in Manipur.
