The turmoil in Manipur was discussed at length during an Extended Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting held in Patna, Bihar, today. The meeting was presided over by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, with senior leaders from across the country in attendance.
Representing Manipur, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) President Keisham Meghachandra Singh and Congress Legislature Party Leader Okram Ibobi Singh participated in the deliberations. During the session, Meghachandra Singh highlighted the continuing violence in the state, noting that over 29 months had passed without a resolution. He criticized the BJP-led state government, describing it as having failed to restore peace, normalcy, and trust among communities.
The MPCC President also outlined proposals before the CWC, reaffirming the party’s commitment to conduct a statewide Peace March aimed at promoting harmony in the state. He demanded the immediate dissolution of the Manipur Legislative Assembly and called for fresh elections, emphasizing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to Manipur had been symbolic and offered neither hope nor concrete solutions to the people.
The Congress Working Committee subsequently adopted resolutions reflecting on the state’s situation, stating that the Union Government’s inaction and silence over the past two and a half years had emboldened perpetrators of violence and hatred. The resolution noted that the Prime Minister’s brief five-hour visit failed to meaningfully engage with the people of Manipur.
Speaking to national media, Meghachandra Singh reiterated the demand for fresh Assembly elections under the Governor’s supervision, asserting that President’s Rule had failed to address the crisis. He also reiterated the party’s seriousness in bringing peace through the proposed statewide Peace March.
In a post on X, Meghachandra Singh expressed gratitude to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, General Secretary (Organisation) K. C. Venugopal, General Secretary (Communications) Jairam Ramesh, and the entire CWC for including Manipur in today’s resolutions.
