Jiribam, March 12:
The operation of a hot mixture plant near Leingangpokpi Primary School has sparked serious concerns among local residents regarding air pollution. The plant, which emits thick black smoke, poses potential health risks, particularly for the children attending the nearby school.
Located just a short distance from the school, the hot mixture plant has been in operation for some time. Teachers at Leingangpokpi Primary School expressed their worries, noting that the smoke from the plant reaches the school grounds, raising alarm over the health implications for students.
Local clubs and community leaders are increasingly concerned about the daily exposure of school children to the plant’s emissions. Many are apprehensive about the long-term effects of inhaling polluted air, especially on the developing lungs of young children.
Thingbaijam Rakesh Singh, General Secretary of the Long Live Club, highlighted that the hot mixture plant was established by Apex Company in the area. He stated, “When they set up the camp, they agreed to adhere to air and water pollution standards, but it is disheartening to see them neglect these commitments while operating the plant.”
Rakesh further emphasized that Leingangpokpi is a densely populated area, and the local club has submitted a formal complaint to the company regarding the emissions. However, they have yet to receive a positive response.
The General Secretary also noted that the emissions not only degrade air quality but also exacerbate broader environmental issues in the region. In light of the growing concerns, the local community is urging the company to enforce stricter emission regulations and prioritize public health over profit.
