A complaint has been lodged before the Manipur Human Rights Commission (MHRC) against several civil society organisations and their office bearers from Tengnoupal district over allegations of issuing a communally divisive press release that allegedly undermines communal harmony and national integration.
The complaint was filed by Mayanglambam Bobby Meetei, a resident of Malom Awang Leikai, who sought intervention of the Commission regarding a press release reportedly issued on May 1, 2026.
In his petition submitted before the Commission, the complainant alleged that the respondents used communally sensitive language and attempted to identify police personnel along communal lines, which, according to him, could adversely affect peace, unity, and integrity in the state.
The complaint named office bearers and signatories associated with several organisations operating in Tengnoupal district, including the Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Molnoi Area Welfare Council, Hill Tribal Council, Kuki Students’ Organisation, and Kuki Women Union and Human Rights.
Those named as respondents in the petition include LS Seikhojang Baite, president of the Kuki Chiefs’ Association, Tengnoupal district; Sonpao Haokip, chairman of Molnoi Area Welfare Council; Jacky Touthang, general secretary of Hill Tribal Council, Moreh; Thangboi Lhungdim, president of Kuki Students’ Organisation, Tengnoupal district; and Phalneikim Mate of Kuki Women Union and Human Rights.
According to the petition, the contents of the press release allegedly carried statements and imputations capable of promoting communal division and creating mistrust against state police personnel during the ongoing sensitive situation in Manipur.
The complainant further contended that such statements could have serious implications on communal harmony and public order in the state if left unchecked.
The petition has urged the Manipur Human Rights Commission to examine the matter thoroughly and initiate appropriate legal action against those responsible in accordance with the law.
