One of the oldest vernacular daily newspapers of northeast India, Daily Desher Katha that functioned as Tripura CPM’s mouthpiece, did not hit the stand on Tuesday, as the authority canceled its registration. The Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) issued the notice to the four decades old Bengali newspaper, published from Agartala.
Meanwhile, the CPM general secretary Sitaram Yechury criticised the decision of RNI to cancel the registration of Daily Desher Katha and termed the action as an attack on freedom of expression. He did not forget to condemn the newly elected BJP-led government in Agartala for this action.
The RNI letter to the newspaper management mentioned about the unauthorised change of ownership of the media outlet and it took the decision following a report from the concerned magistrate in the State capital.
The editor, Samir Paul however denied any kind of irregularities in the publication of the popular daily.
