A commemoration programme marking Nongchup Lanpham in connection with the Anglo-Manipuri War of 1891 was held today at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur, with floral tributes paid to martyrs, freedom fighters and unsung heroes.
The observance was organised by the Justice Committee on Anglo-Manipuri War-1891 Martyrs and Freedom Fighters of Kangleipak (Manipur) in association with descendants of those linked to the 1891 war. The programme began at 10:00 a.m. and featured a silent condolence, lamp lighting ceremony, floral tribute and speeches by invited dignitaries.
Pheiroijam Landhoni Devi, founder of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, attended the function as chief guest, while Joychandra Konthoujam presided over the programme. Thokchom Jogendrajit, Leitam Saratchandra and Longjam Ronendro were present as guests of honour.
The organisers described the event as a solemn remembrance of Nongchup Lanpham, with particular reference to Laimaton, Leimatak and Lamangdong, and highlighted the importance of preserving the legacy of those associated with the historic struggle.
Speaking on the occasion, Joychandra Konthoujam expressed strong concern over the prevailing situation in Manipur and questioned the role of elected representatives in addressing the issues faced by the people. He called for serious reflection on the future of the state and urged communities to collectively take responsibility for safeguarding their interests.
He observed that the state is passing through a critical phase marked by uncertainty, economic hardship and social challenges. He pointed to the growing burden on families, particularly women and children, in the wake of ongoing unrest, and stressed the need for leadership to respond with urgency and accountability.
He further stated that divisions and narrow approaches among communities have contributed to the present crisis, and cautioned that failure to adopt a broader and more inclusive outlook could worsen the situation. He added that unity and collective vision among all communities are essential for achieving lasting peace and stability in the state.
