The Women’s Wing of the Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) has questioned Jawaharlal Nehru University’s (JNU) handling of the sexual harassment allegations against Inner Manipur MP Dr Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and criticised the political campaign demanding his resignation, including the rally led by BJP Manipur president and Rajya Sabha MP A. Sarda Devi.
Addressing media persons at the COCOMI office today afternoon, the organisation’s convenor, Luwangleima, expressed concern over the reported termination of Bimol Akoijam from his position as a JNU professor and the subsequent political mobilisation surrounding the case.
She questioned the circumstances and procedures behind the university’s decision, calling for closer scrutiny of how the allegations were handled. The organisation maintained that the matter required fairness, transparency and adherence to established rules rather than being turned into a political contest.
The COCOMI Women’s Wing also questioned the propriety of staging rallies to demand Bimol Akoijam’s resignation as a Member of Parliament while the controversy remains subject to legal and investigative processes. It expressed concern that political campaigns could shape public opinion before all aspects of the case had been adequately examined.
The criticism comes amid escalating political tensions over the case, with BJP leaders demanding Akoijam’s resignation following his dismissal from JNU, while his supporters have accused the BJP of politicising the allegations. Sarda Devi had earlier led a BJP protest rally in Imphal demanding that the Congress MP resign from Parliament.
Luwangleima stressed the need to assess the university’s actions and the allegations through established procedures, rather than allowing political demands to determine the public narrative.
The COCOMI Women’s Wing’s position centres on the handling of the case and the political response to it, calling for fairness and due process in addressing the allegations against the MP.
