Coordinating Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Convenor YK Dhiren has urged the state government to expedite relief and rehabilitation measures for internally displaced persons (IDPs), stressing the need to provide adequate relief materials and ensure their safe and dignified resettlement.
Speaking at a press conference held at the COCOMI office in Lamphel, Imphal today, Dhiren said the ongoing crisis, which erupted following the May 3, 2023, attacks allegedly carried out by Chin-Kuki narco-terrorist groups against the Meitei community, has left thousands displaced, with many losing their homes and belongings.
He said the government must ensure that all affected IDPs receive adequate relief materials and that concrete steps are taken to facilitate their resettlement without further delay.
Dhiren further stated that COCOMI had been consistently raising concerns over the plight of IDPs, including through its recent appeals to the Naga community, which has also been affected by the prevailing situation and alleged activities of armed groups in the region.
He said the government, including the Chief Minister, had made several assurances regarding the welfare and resettlement of IDPs. However, apart from previously announced measures, no substantial new initiatives had been taken to address their concerns, he alleged.
Referring to the resettlement process at Dolaithabi, Dhiren urged the government to provide proper housing facilities to IDPs who are still living in temporary shelters despite the construction of new houses for displaced families.
He also appealed to the government to ensure that Naga families affected by the violence receive adequate relief materials and that their resettlement process is carried out effectively and systematically.
Dhiren maintained that the government must move beyond assurances and take concrete action to address the hardships faced by displaced families.
