COCOMI calls urgent meeting to address farmer’s woes

Imphal, May 23:

The Coordination Committee on Manipur Integrity (COCOMI) Farmer Wing has announced a critical meeting to address the pressing issues faced by farmers amidst the ongoing conflict in the region. The meeting is scheduled to take place at the Manipur Press Club on May 29 at 11 AM.
In a press release, COCOMI Farmer Wing extended invitations to various organizations dedicated to farmer welfare to join the discussion. The meeting will focus on developing strategies to ensure farmers can plant their crops and examining the role of the Agriculture Department in providing necessary support.
Konthoujam Thoiba, Convener of COCOMI Farmer Wing, highlighted the severe impact of the violence on farmers. “Since the beginning of the violence, farmers have been severely affected. Last year, many were unable to grow their paddy due to threats from Chin Kuki Narco Terrorists. There is a significant concern that this year may present similar challenges,” he stated.
COCOMI’s Mobilization & Organization team, along with the Farmer Wing, has been actively working in red zone areas to facilitate farming activities. They have been deploying village defense volunteers to protect farmers and ensure they can work their fields safely.
In light of these efforts, COCOMI has appealed to state forces not to interfere with the volunteers guarding the paddy fields in these high-risk areas. “These volunteers are crucial for maintaining a secure environment for farming, and any disruption by state forces could exacerbate the difficulties faced by farmers,” Khonthoujam Thoiba emphasized.
