Imphal, Jan 7:
The Churachandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC), an umbrella organization comprising the Meitei Society, Meitei Youth Organisation Churachandpur, Ima Leimarel Apunba Lup, Nupi Samaj, and the Churachandpur Meitei Unit Clash Victim Committee, has called on the government to expedite the release of a recently announced special student welfare package for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Speaking at a press conference held at the Manipur Press Club, CMUC Convenor Hemam Jogendro Meitei expressed gratitude for the government’s initiative but stressed the urgency of disbursing the package before January 31, 2025. “We appreciate the announcement of this special package for IDP students. However, we urge the authorities to release it on or before January 31,” he stated.
Jogendro highlighted that the package, which includes provisions for school uniforms, admission fees, and textbooks, needs to be distributed promptly to ensure its timely use. He also appealed to private schools and colleges in the state to extend admission deadlines for IDP students.
Addressing the challenges faced by displaced families, Jogendro urged authorities to issue certification for students residing with relatives or in rented accommodations to validate their status as IDPs. This, he said, would facilitate their admission to educational institutions.
Another CMUC member shared statistics, revealing that Churachandpur alone accounts for 1,483 IDP students, with a total of approximately 15,000 IDPs from 19 villages. Despite government assurances of free education for IDP students, he criticized the inadequate facilities in government schools, including a lack of qualified teachers and proper infrastructure.
“Although some private schools have announced free education for IDP students, not all have implemented it. As parents, we want our children to receive quality education, which is often only possible in private schools,” he explained, emphasizing the financial strain on families affected by the crisis.
The CMUC reiterated its demand for the government to fulfill its promise and release the welfare package to alleviate the burden on IDP families and ensure their children’s access to quality education. Additionally, the CMUC had also submitted a memorandum to the Chef Minister of Manipur in the regard.
