Imphal, March 6:
The Churachandpur Meitei United Committee (CMUC) has strongly condemned the removal of internally displaced persons (IDPs) from official relief camp records by the district authorities.
Since the ethnic violence that erupted on May 3, 2023, thousands of displaced individuals have been taking refuge in relief camps across various locations. Families, including parents, children, and relatives, continue to live in these camps as they have nowhere else to go. CMUC has termed the sudden removal of their names from official records as unacceptable and unjust.
“Are those who lost their homes due to arson and destruction no longer considered victims? Is staying in a relief camp a choice rather than a necessity?” questioned the CMUC in a statement, urging authorities to recognize the hardship faced by the displaced families.
The committee highlighted that many students residing in the camps are struggling to continue their education, while families with no alternative shelter remain dependent on relief provisions. Arbitrary removal from the records could worsen their plight and deny them access to essential aid.
CMUC also refuted claims that IDPs in the relief camps are leading comfortable lives. “Many of them still have no stable homes or sources of income. They are in the camps out of sheer necessity, not by choice,” the statement added.
The organization has demanded that authorities such as the Deputy Commissioner (DC), Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO), and Sub-Deputy Collector (SDC), who are responsible for overseeing the relief camps, take immediate action to prevent unjust removal and ensure the displaced individuals receive proper rehabilitation before being asked to vacate.
