Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh today led a Tiranga Yatra in Imphal as part of the nationwide Har Ghar Tiranga campaign ahead of India’s 80th Independence Day on August 15, calling for collective efforts to strengthen peace, unity and confidence among the people of Manipur.
The yatra, organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), saw participation from party workers and members of the public carrying the Tricolour and raising patriotic slogans.
The programme came a day after the Chief Minister’s visit to Kangpokpi, where he engaged with local stakeholders as part of efforts to advance peace and restore normalcy in the state. During the visit, Khemchand announced that national highways in Manipur would be reopened and that the Imphal-Guwahati bus service would resume, providing greater connectivity for people across communities.
The Chief Minister’s recent outreach to different communities has been projected by the BJP as part of efforts to rebuild confidence and create conditions for normalcy after more than three years of conflict.
BJP Manipur president and Rajya Sabha MP A. Sharda Devi, who also participated in the yatra, appealed to the people to support the Chief Minister’s initiatives for restoring peace. She said Khemchand had been engaging with communities in different parts of the state, including Kangpokpi and Senapati, and urged people to maintain a positive outlook towards the government’s peace efforts.
Sharda Devi also called upon citizens to participate in the Har Ghar Tiranga campaign by hoisting the national flag at their homes. She urged people, particularly the youth, to promote messages of national development, unity and patriotism.
The Har Ghar Tiranga campaign, being observed from August 9 to 17, encourages citizens to display the Tricolour at their homes, institutions and workplaces as part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Similar programmes were held across Manipur. In Jiribam, Deputy Commissioner Arvind Hanglem flagged off a cycle rally from the Hijam Irabot Statue to Echel Club, with around 30 cyclists, including students, local residents and security personnel, participating despite heavy rain.
In Churachandpur, Deputy Commissioner Krishna Kumar, IAS, launched the district-level campaign and urged citizens to observe the national flag with dignity and in accordance with the Flag Code of India. He called for broad public participation, describing Har Ghar Tiranga as a people’s movement aimed at fostering patriotism, unity and harmony.
Various activities, including rallies, exhibitions, rangoli programmes and flag-hoisting events, are scheduled across the state during the campaign.
