CM Khemchand appeals for peace after Ukhrul violence

Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on Monday appealed for peace and restraint following violent incidents in Ukhrul district, as he visited injured persons undergoing treatment at the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences. During the visit, the Chief Minister interacted with the injured and called for calm, stating that dialogue and restraint are essential to prevent further escalation of tensions.
“I urge all sections of society to maintain peace and harmony. Dialogue and restraint are essential to prevent further escalation,” the Chief Minister said.
Earlier in the day, Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, accompanied by Ukhrul MLA Ram Muivah and Saikul MLA Kimneo Hangshing Haokip, visited Litan Sareikhong, where clashes between members of the Tangkhul and Kuki communities were reported. Official sources said that more than 20 houses were set on fire during the incident, along with three four-wheeler vehicles.
In the aftermath of the violence, security forces were deployed in large numbers in and around the affected areas to maintain law and order. Prohibitory orders have also been imposed. Residents from both communities have begun evacuating the area, moving to safer locations amid fears of further violence.
Authorities stated that the situation is being closely monitored and appealed to the public for calm and cooperation with the administration.
The violence in Ukhrul followed earlier unrest in Tuibong area of Manipur, where clashes between security forces and a mob lasted for nearly nine hours, from around 6 pm on Thursday to 3 am on Friday. The unrest began after protests against the swearing-in of Deputy Chief Ministers Nemcha Kipgen and Losii Dikho turned violent in Churachandpur district, prompting authorities to impose a total shutdown in the affected areas.
