Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand visited Akampat Relief Camp today and handed over an ex-gratia cheque of Rs. 10 lakh to the family of an eight-year-old internally displaced girl whose body was recovered beneath Singjamei Bridge on April 6.
The Chief Minister met the bereaved family and handed the cheque to the victim’s father, expressing condolences and assuring that due legal action would be pursued against those responsible. He also interacted with internally displaced persons (IDPs) residing at the camp and took note of their concerns.
In a statement shared later on social media, the Chief Minister said that the welfare of IDPs remains a priority, adding that directions have been issued to officials to address grievances and ensure timely rehabilitation and resettlement. He stated that the government remains committed to restoring stability and dignity to affected families.
During the visit, the Family Committee of Akampat Relief Camp submitted a memorandum seeking early resettlement, citing the difficulties of prolonged displacement. Residents also called for improved security measures in their native areas, including Moreh.
Deputy Commissioner of Imphal East L. Nivedita stated that efforts are underway to ensure justice in the case and confirmed that the accused has been remanded in custody.
The minor, originally from Moreh, had gone missing on April 5 and was found dead the following morning. Police arrested a suspect, identified as Laishram Langamba, a resident of the same relief camp, who was later produced before a POCSO court on April 10 and remanded to judicial custody under the relevant provisions of law.
The Chief Minister was accompanied by district officials and police personnel during the visit.
