Chandel farmers encouraged to cultivate millets in large scale

Seed  Day on Millets under IISS, NEH Component was conducted at Chandonpokpi Village, Chandel by ICAR Research Complex for NEH Region, Manipur Centre in collaboration with Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Chandel.
Dr. N. Prakash, Joint Director, ICAR Manipur Centre, Dr. I.Meghachandra Singh, Principal Scientist & Nodal Officer – ISP/BSP, ICAR, Manipur Centre, Y. Romeo Chothe, Chief of Chandonpokpi Village and Dr. Deepak Singh, Sr. Scientist & Head, KVK Chandel were the presidium members.
Dr. N. Prakash, during his speech encouraged the farmers to cultivate millets in large scale because of its importance value and sustaining their livelihood. Dr. I Meghachandra, informed the farmers the purpose of the programme.
He also highlighted the importance of millet seed production and the need to introduce processing unit for millets in the district. Y. Romeo Chothe thank the ICAR and KVK for introducing the improved varieties of Millets in the district under seed production on millets under IISS, NEH Component and informed that it is a viable option to mitigate drought like situation.
Dr. MA Ansari, Scientist (Agronomy) addressed that millets have high nutritional and medicinal values which is important for the farmer health and also said that value addition and processing of the millets can generate their incomes. While Dr. Deepak Singh delivered the keynote address. Ts. Leenda Monsang, ACTO (Plant Breeding) highlighted the Millets Seed Production under IISS, NEH Component programme in the district. The Programme was also attended by Dr. E. Lamalaxmi Devi,  Scientist (Genetics & Plant Breeding); Bhuvaneswari S, Scientist (Genetics & Plant Breeding); Dr. Konsam Sarika, (Genetics & Plant Breeding) and Staff of KVK.
