Imphal, Nov 13:
In response to escalating violence and law and order concerns in Manipur, the Centre has deployed 20 additional companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF), totaling approximately 2,000 personnel, to the state. Official sources confirmed on Wednesday that the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) ordered the immediate airlifting and deployment of these units late Tuesday night.
The decision comes after a fierce gun battle on Monday between suspected militants and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jiribam district. Insurgents, wearing camouflage uniforms and armed with sophisticated weapons, attacked the Borobekra police station and a nearby CRPF camp in Jakuradhor. At least 10 militants were killed in the ensuing firefight, during which a large cache of advanced weaponry was seized by the CRPF.
The newly deployed forces include 15 companies from the CRPF and 5 from the Border Security Force (BSF). This brings the total number of CAPF units in the state to 218, joining the 198 already stationed since ethnic violence erupted in May 2023, resulting in the deaths of over 200 people.
The additional forces will remain under the Manipur government’s control until November 30, as per MHA’s directive, with the possibility of an extension depending on the situation. Tensions in the state have remained high since last week, with fresh incidents of violence reported across Imphal Valley, where armed groups from both warring communities clashed in ongoing skirmishes.
