Centre decides to reduce areas under controversial law AFSPA in NE

Soon after the Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced the decision of Prime Minister Modi to decrease the jurisdiction of “disturbed areas” declared under the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, in Nagaland, Assam and Manipur, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had announced that AFSPA will be lifted from the jurisdiction of four more police station in the state.
While talking as the chief guest during the Sushma Swaraj Award distribution function organised by BJP Mahila Morcha, Manipur Pradesh at JN Dance Academy here in Imphal, Chief Minister N. Biren Singh had stated that AFSPA will be lifted from the jurisdiction of Wangoi Police Station, Leimakhong Police Station, Nambol Police Station and Moirang Police station.
Earlier in 2004, the government had lifted AFSPA from some areas of Imphal East and Imphal West under the jurisdiction of six police stations, including Imphal police station, Lamphel, City police station, Singjamei, Porompat, and Heingang police stations.
On April 1, 2022 the government lifted AFSPA from the jurisdiction of nine police stations (PS) of Sekmai, Lamsang and Patsoi PS in Imphal West, Lamlai PS and Irilbung PS in Imphal East, Bishnupur PS in Bishnupur district, Kakching PS in Kakching district, Thoubal PS in Thoubal district and Jiribam PS in Jiribam district.
After the government lifted AFSPA from the jurisdiction of 4 more police stations as announced by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh today, the total number of police stations – where AFSPA is withdrawn will be 19. That is AFSPA will not be existed in the jurisdiction of 19 Police Station.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah had stated that the decision for decreasing the jurisdiction where AFSPA is enforced has been taken on account of significant improvement in the security situation in northeast India.
“A historic day for the Northeast! PM @narendramodi led GoI has once again decided to decrease the disturbed areas in Nagaland, Assam, and Manipur under the AFSPA. This decision has been taken on account of significant improvement in the security situation in North-East India,” Home Minister Amit Shah said.
An area or district is notified as a disturbed area under the AFSPA to facilitate the operations of the armed forces.
